Since the beginning of the school year, high school freshman Melinda has found that it's been getting harder and harder for her to speak out loud: "My throat is always sore, my lips raw.... Every time I try to talk to my parents or a teacher, I sputter or freeze.... It's like I have some kind of spastic laryngitis." What could have caused Melinda to suddenly fall mute? Could it be due to the fact that no one at school is speaking to her because she called the cops and got everyone busted at the seniors' big end-of-summer party? Or maybe it's because her parents' only form of communication is Post-It notes written on their way out the door to their nine-to-whenever jobs. While Melinda is bothered by these things, deep down she knows the real reason why she's been struck mute: Andy Evans. He's a senior at Melinda's high school, and Melinda hasn't been able to speak clearly since the Incident with him at the senior party last August.

                              Review
Laurie Halse Anderson is a genus. She really captured the pain and torture that Melinda was going through. I saw the movie adaption of Speak and fell in love with it, but when i found out it was a book i FLIPPED out. My friend ended up getting the book for me the day after i found out it was a book. I started reading this book during school and finished it that same day. I got in so much trouble for reading during class but it was worth it. The pain that Melinda goes through is very powerful. Laurie Halse Anderson created an amazing moving book about pain, torment, secrets, and salvation. Everyone should read this book. Laurie Halse Anderson is one of my favorite authors. She is the author of Wintergirls,Twisted, and Catalyst.

Perfect Parker Fadley isn’t so perfect anymore.  She’s quit the cheerleading squad, she’s dumped her perfect boyfriend, and she’s failing school.  Her parents are on a constant suicide watch and her counselors think she’s playing games…but what they don’t know, the real reason for this whole mess, isn’t something she can say out loud.  It isn’t even something she can say to herself.  A horrible thing has happened and it just might be her fault.  If she can just remove herself from everybody--be totally alone--then everything will be okay...The problem is, nobody will let her.

                                                   Review
Cracked Up To Be had a eerie twist to it. The main character Parker went from being a perfect student to quit cheerleading, dumped her perfect boyfriend, and is drinking now. Something bad happened and now she drinks her worries away and no one knows why her life is spiraling down. It is a excellent read. It had depth and humor. I am planning on reading more of Courtney Summers books very soon.

 More books by Courtney Summers:

Some Girls Are

Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard--falling from it is even harder.  Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High... until vicious rumors about her and her best friend's boyfriend start going around.  Now Regina's been "frozen out" and her ex-best friends are out for revenge.  If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day.  She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully.  Friendship doesn't come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend... if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don't break them both first.

            Fall For Anything

When Eddie Reeves’s father commits suicide her life is consumed by the nagging question of why? Why when he was a legendary photographer and a brilliant teacher? Why when he seemed to find inspiration in everything he saw? And, most important, why when he had a daughter who loved him more than anyone else in the world? When she meets Culler Evans, a former student of her father’s and a photographer himself, an instant and dangerous attraction begins. Culler seems to know more about her father than she does and could possibly hold the key to the mystery surrounding his death. But Eddie’s vulnerability has weakened her and Culler Evans is getting too close. Her need for the truth keeps her hanging on...but are some questions better left unanswered?

                             Review
I dont even know how to explain this book. The first word that comes to mind is WOW. Ellen Hopkins really understands the pain that the main characters are going through. It a a beautifully written books. The way Ellen Hopkins described every single detail and emotion made me feel like i was Vanessa, Tony, and Conner. I cried, gasped, and couldn't believe what was happening every single time i turned the page. This book is a page turner and will break your heart. It really shows the pain that these three teens and anyone else who has the impulse to end their lives and how one impulse changes your entire world. A must read for anyone, and i can not wait for the companion Perfect to come out Sept. 13th.

                                     Perfect(9/13/11)
Everyone has something, someone, somewhere else that they’d rather be. For four high-school seniors, their goals of perfection are just as different as the paths they take to get there. Cara’s parents’ unrealistic expectations have already sent her twin brother Conner spiraling toward suicide. For her, perfect means rejecting their ideals to take a chance on a new kind of love. Kendra covets the perfect face and body—no matter what surgeries and drugs she needs to get there. To score his perfect home run—on the field and off—Sean will sacrifice more than he can ever win back. And Andre realizes that to follow his heart and achieve his perfect performance, he’ll be living a life his ancestors would never have understood.
Everyone wants to be perfect, but when perfection loses its meaning, how far will you go? What would you give up to be perfect?
A riveting and startling companion to the bestselling Impulse, Ellen Hopkins's Perfect exposes the harsh truths about what it takes to grow up and grow into our own skins, our own selves.

“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia and Cassie were best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies. But now Cassie is dead. Lia's mother is busy saving other people's lives. Her father is away on business. Her step-mother is clueless. And the voice inside Lia's head keeps telling her to remain in control, stay strong, lose more, weigh less. If she keeps on going this way—thin, thinner, thinnest—maybe she'll disappear altogether.

This book made me speechless. The way that Laurie Halse Anderson got into the depth of the pain someone who is suffering an eating disorder is beyond amazing. This book is by far one of the most intense, haunting, and inspiring books i have read that is revolving a teen with an Eating Disorder. I got interested in the subject of eating disorders i ended up doing my English research paper on how eating disorders are becoming more common now in teens. It is beautifully written just like her other book Speak. It is a must read for young adults and adults alike.
